Affiliate Selling Overview and Tips

Here is a high level overview of the affiliate selling process –

The first step in the process is Keyword Research. What are your customers looking for exactly? If you are only looking to sell to your readers and subscribers to your list – that's one thing, but if you are looking to rank and obtain search engine traffic, you'll also need to know where you're able to compete.

Here is my favorite Keyword Suggestion Toolit shows you the keyword searches over multiple search engines.

As a small business, you probably won't want to compete with highly competitive keywords that people have already spent thousands of dollars, and probably years of time getting established. But if you look through the keywords that come up in your search, you can find searched for keywords that don't have as much competition.

For example, instead of targeting losing weight for High Energy Eating – I've targeted terms having to do with healthy eating.

The keyword House Cleaning is highly competitive. I have tried for years to get a top 10 listing for that keyword, and combinations. Never been able to get there. I sell a copy of Secret Confessions of a Clean Freak every day from the keyword Clean Freak. And that didn't even show up on keyword suggestions.

Using your keywords –

You know the drill – use your keyword in your title tag and meta description. Use it again in your H1 tag. Use it again in H2, H3… tags. Sprinkle the keyword – and related keywords throughout your article.

Using related words is very important now that Google is changing to Symantec indexing. In an article written for people to read instead of search engines, you would naturally use other terms. Google is constantly looking for ways to cut out the spam sites – which is good for you and me this year.

How to figure out what to write about –

Now, you are welcome to use any of the articles at CommonSenseLiving.com – and that will be great content for your readers. You will not be able to get rank for that content though because it is duplicate content. The days of ranking by republishing the same content all over the web are long over.

That being said -

Remember that writing about your personal experience with a product is the best way to generate sales.

The second best way is informative articles. But how do you figure out what to write?

The simple solution is to go to the bullets on the sales letter for the product you are going to promote, and write an article about each one.

Which leads us to another opportunity -

Build your list even if you're selling someone else's products.

Load these articles into an autoresponder, such as AWeber.

You are welcome to use the autoresponder series already set up for High Energy Eating. Don't forget to change the urls in the followup messages to your affiliate url.

Scroll down the followup message page and put this code in the box - food-for-health-8c369

Next -

Put up a squeeze page offering tips – and get people to opt-in before you send them to the sales page.

When you set up your autoresponder, there is an option for what page they go to once they've signed up. Simply put in your affiliate link – or better yet…

Your redirect link.

If you've been around any length of time – you've seen links that look like this –

CommonSenseLiving.com/recommends/product name

You set up a folder on your domain named recommends.

Each product redirect page will go in to this folder.

You still want to title your page and put a keyword rich meta description. Actually, I'm not sure this makes a difference, but why take chances?

Then you simply put this meta tag in the <head> </head> section.

<META http-equiv=Refresh content=0;url=http://www.highenergyeating.com>

Of course, you will change the url to your affiliate url.

Now you have the ability to sell related products to your new list. Cool, ey?

And when you're leaving comments in blogs or forums, you have a much better looking url to use.

And speaking of blogs – do you have one?

If you do, are you using adwords to monetize?

Why not put your own ads for your affiliate products instead?

Instead of placing advertiser banners, put up the banners from the products you're selling.

And if you have money to spend, did you know that if you use the google content network, you can target specific sites?

If I wanted to bid high enough, I could put a banner for High Energy Eating on Rachel Ray's site. How's that for outrageous?

This is just a high level overview, but put these tips to use right away. Don't overcomplicate it!

To your success!

Carole

P.S. I hope to be paying you a lot of money!
